Candlemas of the Lord The Presentation of the Lord, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, is a Christian celebration commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem. According to the Gospel of Luke, Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple to fulfill the requirements of the Law of Moses.
This event is significant in Orthodox Christianity as it marks the moment when Jesus, the Son of God, was presented to God in the Temple. It is a reminder of Jesus" fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies and his role as the Messiah.
In Orthodox iconography, the Presentation of the Lord is often depicted with Mary holding the infant Jesus in her arms, while Joseph stands nearby. The elderly prophet Simeon and the prophetess Anna, who recognized Jesus as the Messiah when he was presented in the Temple, are also shown in the icon.
The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is celebrated on February 2nd in the Eastern Orthodox Church and is a time for Orthodox Christians to reflect on the significance of Jesus" presentation in the Temple and his role as the Light of the World.
