Venerable Paul of Thebes Venerable Paul of Thebes, also known as Saint Paul the First Hermit, was an early Christian ascetic who is considered to be one of the first Christian hermits. He is often depicted in Orthodox iconography as an elderly man with a long beard, dressed in a simple tunic and holding a staff. In Orthodox tradition, Venerable Paul of Thebes is venerated as a model of extreme asceticism and devotion to God. He is said to have lived in the desert of Egypt for many years, living a life of prayer, fasting, and solitude. According to hagiographical accounts, he was sustained by miraculous food brought to him by a raven. Icons of Venerable Paul of Thebes often depict him in a contemplative posture, with a look of deep spiritual intensity on his face. His icon serves as a reminder of the importance of prayer, fasting, and self-denial in the Christian life, as well as the power of God to sustain and protect those who trust in Him.
