Andrew the First-Called Andrew the First-Called, also known as Saint Andrew the Apostle, is an important figure in Orthodox Christianity. He was one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus and is known as the first-called because he was the first to be called by Jesus to follow him. In Orthodox iconography, Saint Andrew is often depicted with a long white beard and wearing a robe and mantle. He is usually shown holding a book or a scroll, symbolizing his role as a preacher and teacher of the Gospel. Sometimes he is also depicted with a fishing net, as he was a fisherman before being called by Jesus. Saint Andrew is venerated as the patron saint of fishermen, sailors, and Greece, among other things. His feast day is celebrated on November 30th in the Orthodox Church. Icons of Saint Andrew are commonly found in Orthodox churches and homes, where he is revered as a powerful intercessor and a model of faith and dedication to Christ. Devotion to Saint Andrew is deeply rooted in Orthodox tradition, and his icons serve as a reminder of his important role in spreading the message of Christianity.
