Saint John of Rila the Wonderworker Saint John of Rila, also known as Saint Ivan Rilski, is a revered saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He is considered the patron saint of Bulgaria and is known for his ascetic life and miraculous deeds. Saint John of Rila is often depicted in icons as a bearded man dressed in the traditional monastic attire, holding a staff and a scroll with a prayer. In Orthodox iconography, Saint John of Rila is often depicted with a halo around his head, symbolizing his holiness and closeness to God. He is also sometimes shown with a bear, as he is said to have tamed a fierce bear that became his companion in the wilderness. Devotees of Saint John of Rila pray to him for his intercession in times of need, especially for healing and protection. His feast day is celebrated on October 19th in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Icons of Saint John of Rila are venerated by Orthodox Christians as a way to connect with his spiritual presence and seek his blessings. They serve as a reminder of his life of prayer, fasting, and self-denial, as well as his devotion to God and his fellow man. Through the veneration of his icons, believers seek to draw closer to Saint John of Rila and to follow his example of faith and piety.
