Presentation of the Lord The Presentation of the Lord is a feast in the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches that commemorates the presentation of Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem. According to the Gospel of Luke, Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple to fulfill the requirements of the Law of Moses. This feast is also known as the Meeting of the Lord, as it commemorates the meeting of Jesus with the righteous Simeon and the prophetess Anna in the Temple. Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah and proclaimed the Nunc Dimittis, while Anna praised God and spoke about Jesus to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. The Presentation of the Lord is celebrated on February 2nd, exactly 40 days after Christmas. It is a joyful feast that marks the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. In Orthodox iconography, the Presentation of the Lord is often depicted with Mary and Joseph bringing Jesus to the Temple, Simeon holding the infant Jesus, and Anna standing nearby. This event is seen as a fulfillment of the prophecies and a revelation of the true identity of Jesus as the Savior of the world. Icons of the Presentation of the Lord serve as a reminder of the faithfulness of Mary and Joseph in fulfilling the Law of Moses, the recognition of Jesus as the Messiah by Simeon and Anna, and the significance of this event in the life of Christ. They are venerated by the faithful as a way to connect with the mystery and beauty of this important feast in the liturgical calendar.
