Saint Spyridon Saint Spyridon (c. 270 – 348 AD) was a fourth-century bishop of Trimythous in Cyprus. He is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and is known for his miracles and for his defense of the divinity of Jesus Christ during the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. Saint Spyridon is often depicted in iconography as a bishop holding a Gospel book and a staff, with a halo around his head symbolizing his holiness. He is also sometimes shown with a vessel of myrrh, as he is said to have exuded a sweet-smelling fragrance after his death. Saint Spyridon is considered a patron saint of shepherds, and he is especially revered in Cyprus and among Orthodox Christians. His feast day is celebrated on December 12th in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Icons of Saint Spyridon are used in Orthodox Christian worship and prayer, as they are believed to be windows to the heavenly realm and to facilitate a connection with the saint and with God. Many Orthodox Christians venerate icons of Saint Spyridon as a way of seeking his intercession and protection in their lives.
