St. Daniel Stylite Venerable Daniel the Stylite, also known as Daniel the Prophet, was a Christian monk and ascetic who lived in the 5th century. He is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and is known for his extreme asceticism and devotion to prayer.
Daniel is particularly renowned for his practice of living atop a pillar, a form of asceticism known as stylitism. He spent many years living on top of a pillar in Constantinople, fasting, praying, and enduring great hardships in order to draw closer to God.
In Orthodox iconography, Venerable Daniel the Stylite is often depicted standing on top of a pillar, with angels surrounding him and offering him sustenance. He is shown with a long beard and wearing the traditional monastic garb of a monk.
Venerable Daniel is considered a model of extreme asceticism and unwavering faith in the Orthodox Church. His life and example continue to inspire Christians to strive for greater spiritual depth and closeness to God through prayer, fasting, and self-denial.
