Hieromartyr Blasius of Sebastia Hieromartyr Blasius of Sebastia, also known as Saint Blaise, was a Christian bishop and martyr who lived in the 3rd century. He was born in the city of Sebastia in Armenia and became known for his piety and miracles. One of the most well-known stories about Saint Blaise is that he miraculously healed a boy who was choking on a fish bone. This miracle led to him becoming the patron saint of those who suffer from throat ailments. Saint Blaise was known for his steadfast faith in the face of persecution. He refused to renounce his Christian beliefs, even when faced with torture and death. He was eventually martyred during the reign of the Roman Emperor Licinius. In Orthodox iconography, Saint Blaise is often depicted as a bishop holding a candle and two crossed candles, symbolizing his role as the patron saint of throat ailments. He is venerated as a powerful intercessor for those suffering from illnesses of the throat and is celebrated on February 3rd in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Saint Blaise is a beloved saint in the Orthodox Christian tradition, revered for his faith, miracles, and steadfast witness to Christ even in the face of persecution. May we be inspired by his example of courage and devotion to our Lord.
