Presentation of the Lord The Presentation of the Lord is a feast in the Eastern Orthodox Church that commemorates the presentation of Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem. According to the Gospel of Luke, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple to present him to the Lord, as was the custom for firstborn sons.
In Orthodox iconography, the Presentation of the Lord is often depicted with Mary holding the infant Jesus in her arms, with Joseph nearby. The elderly prophet Simeon, who prophesied about Jesus being a light for revelation to the Gentiles, is also shown in the icon. Sometimes, the prophetess Anna, who praised God and spoke about Jesus to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem, is included in the icon as well.
The icon of the Presentation of the Lord is a reminder of the importance of Jesus" early life and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. It is a celebration of the light of Christ coming into the world and bringing salvation to all people. The feast is observed on February 2nd, forty days after Christmas, and is also known as Candlemas in the Western Christian tradition.
