Jupiter Steam Train 1868 The Jupiter Steam Train 1868 was a historic locomotive that played a significant role in the development of the American railroad system. Built in 1868 by the Schenectady Locomotive Works, the Jupiter was one of the original locomotives used by the Central Pacific Railroad during the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad. The Jupiter was a wood-burning steam locomotive with a distinctive design featuring a cowcatcher at the front and a large smokestack belching out steam and smoke. It was a powerful locomotive, capable of pulling heavy loads over long distances at impressive speeds for its time. The Jupiter gained fame for its role in the "Golden Spike" ceremony on May 10, 1869, where it met with the Union Pacific Railroad"s locomotive, the No. 119, at Promontory Summit, Utah. The two locomotives touched cowcatchers to mark the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, linking the East and West coasts of the United States for the first time. Today, the Jupiter Steam Train 1868 is preserved as a historic artifact and is on display at the Golden Spike National Historic Site in Utah, where visitors can see this iconic locomotive up close and learn about its significant place in American history.
