IJN I400 Submarine The IJN I400 submarine was a large submarine built by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. It was one of the largest submarines ever built, measuring over 400 feet in length. The I400 was designed for long-range operations and was capable of carrying three Seiran aircraft in a hangar on its deck. The I400 submarines were intended to be used for secret missions, including long-range reconnaissance and attacks on the United States mainland. However, the war ended before the I400 submarines could be put into operation for these missions. The I400 submarine had a crew of 144 men and was armed with eight torpedo tubes. It was powered by four diesel engines and electric motors, which allowed it to travel at speeds of up to 18 knots on the surface and 6.5 knots underwater. After the war, the I400 submarines were scuttled by the Japanese navy to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. Today, the I400 submarines remain at the bottom of the ocean, a reminder of the technological advancements made during World War II.
