Description
The painting depicts a Capercaillie, a large grouse, in a cedar frame. The bird is perched atop a branch and looks out of the frame. The frame is decorated with foliage and flowers, and the background is a soft blue.
The painting is signed and dated in the lower right corner, "G. C. Bingham 1864".
History
The painting was completed in 1864 and is currently housed in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. It was acquired by the museum in 1978.
The painting is one of several works by Bingham depicting birds in frames, including a Wild Turkey in a Cedar Frame (1864) and a Prairie Hen in a Cedar Frame (1864).
