The Bathhouse Row Art Panel is a mural located in Hot Springs National Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. It was painted in 1934 by artist Ethel Magafan as part of the Public Works of Art Project.
Description
The mural is located on the exterior wall of the Lamar Bathhouse on Bathhouse Row. It measures 8ft by 28ft and is painted in oil on canvas. The mural depicts a view of the row of bathhouses along Central Avenue in Hot Springs. The bathhouses are shown in the background, while the foreground features a variety of figures, including Native Americans, African Americans, and white Americans, all enjoying the therapeutic waters of the hot springs.
History
The mural was commissioned in 1934 as part of the Public Works of Art Project, a New Deal program that funded the creation of artworks in public spaces. It was painted by artist Ethel Magafan, who was born in Arkansas and had studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. The mural was restored in 1994.
