Columns - a popular architectural and decorative element. The first columns were intended as a support, their main task was to support something, the roof of the building, for example. Now columns in modern houses are put rather for interior decoration.
In this article we will tell you about what columns are used nowadays in the interiors of houses and apartments, in the halls of restaurants and cafes, how they differ, what functionality they carry. And also we will tell about how columns are made on CNC machines and show the most interesting 3D models from our assortment.
Column in our time, application:
A column is a pillar, often twisted or carved, usually with a cannelure (these are vertical grooves running along the entire column, from the base to the top of the piece).
The column has a base (the lower part) and a capitol (the upper part). The base and the capitol are often characterized by original decoration.
Often in modern interiors are installed and columns connected by arches.
Earlier columns served mainly as an exterior element, decorated the facades of buildings. Today they are more often used for:
- interior decoration,
- visual division of the room into zones (without walls and partitions),
- for the design of pergolas, porches,
- to decorate entrance groups, door constructions,
- to decorate furniture, fireplace portals,
- in some cases, columns help to hide something (for example, pipes, wiring, some architectural elements).
Columns allow you to visually pull the space upwards (to create a sense of higher ceilings). But they can be used only in fairly large rooms. In small and narrow columns will only get in the way and "pressure".
With the help of large and small columns is easy to emphasize the classic styles of interior. Columns - a good reference to the past. Set the right mood.
Make the interior more elegant and solemn. By the way, that is why in the halls of restaurants, banquet halls or dining rooms - columns are more appropriate than, for example, in children's rooms. However, much will also depend on the style in which the column is made.
Types and styles:
Despite the fact that a column is a seemingly simple architectural element consisting of only three parts, it can have absolutely any appearance.
It can differ in:
- The section of the column (it can be round, square, irregularly shaped)
- Material (it can be concrete, stone, gypsum, wood, cardboard, polyurethane and so on)
- Style of the column.
For example, classical are light-colored columns, with elegant carved decoration on the base and capitals. They are often installed in pairs. The base is laconic, traditional, with longitudinal grooves.
Baroque columns are twisted or spiral. With rich carved decoration in the form of acanthus leaves, ivy or vines wrapping the entire column from top to base. Baroque is prone to excess, to opulence, to a large number of decorative details. Therefore, in this case, any "embellishments" will be appropriate.
Art Deco style is more like classical columns in the antique version.
In the oriental interior columns are often connected lancet arches, they are richly decorated with Arabic ligature, small frequent pattern.
Columns in the Art Nouveau style - are characterized by some asymmetry, curvature. Abundantly decorated with plant ornaments.
In modern interiors are most often installed minimalist columns. Their main task - zoning of open spaces. Accentuating elements. Modern columns often have a square cross-section. And minimal decor.
In some cases in the interiors are used unusual designer columns, creative shapes, connecting with shelves, with furniture, with bar counters, combining the functionality of different products.
Any columns can be made on CNC machines.
Manufacturing of columns on CNC machines:
Carved columns can be a great alternative to plaster or concrete columns.
They are simply and quickly produced on CNC machines from the following materials (wood, MDF, chipboard, less often from stone - granite, marble, composites and so on).
Most often to create three-dimensional decor requires 4-axis machines with numerical control.
Milling machine with a high level of detail repeats the decor specified by the 3d model of the future product.
All that is needed for quality work of the machine is suitable cutters, material and a model of the future product in Stl format.
The model allows you to:
Evaluate the appearance of the future product,
To make timely corrections, to finalize the decor according to your wish,
Build a control program for the CNC machine (thus setting the cutting path for it).
The machine produces columns of different sizes quickly and accurately. Repeating in detail the program given by the 3D model.
That is why it is so important to choose a quality 3D model.
