If images of the Virgin Mary more than 800. The icons of Jesus are much less.
And the majority of images are connected with holidays and biblical subjects where Christ is shown surrounded by many other figures.
The main icons where Jesus is depicted alone are two in fact - it is the Savior of the Uncrowned and Pantocrator. These images have several varieties. The background, details of the image differ. But the basis is the same.
Below we will tell about the most significant icons of Jesus Christ and give examples of our models.
Savior Almighty (Pantocrator)
A common image of Christ, characteristic of Eastern Orthodox iconography. The Lord is depicted here at the waist, with the Gospel in his left hand or with a scroll and blessing with his right hand.
There are different variants of this icon. Jesus is depicted standing in full height, or sitting on a throne, there are variants at the waist and chest. The Gospel can be open or closed.
The Almighty here carries the meaning of omnipotence, "ruler of everything", "Ruler of the world". Icons of this type first appeared in the 9th-10th century in Byzantium. The oldest known image is Christ Pantocrator from the Sinai Monastery (icon of the middle of the 6th century).
It is customary to place this image under the central dome of Orthodox churches.
The Savior on the throne
The Savior on the throne (or the Almighty on the throne) is one of the most widespread variants of the icon of Pantocrator.
Here Christ is seated on a throne with a cushion on it. He is clothed in traditional robes. At his feet is a footstool.
This image was found as early as the Roman catacombs (burial places of the early Christian period), but the final iconography developed by the 10th century.
The image of the throne is associated with the symbolism of royalty. Lines about the throne are also found in religious descriptions, they say that God will appear to the Old Testament prophets sitting on the throne and sitting on it will perform the Last Judgment.
The Savior of the Uncrowned:
The Savior of the Unmerciful is the second (after the Almighty) widespread image that is the basis for iconographic depictions of Christ in the Orthodox Church.
Different periods of history brought its own features of iconography. But there are similar features.
The icon depicts the face of Jesus, with wide-open eyes, with a calm gaze, even arcs of eyebrows, a thin nose. The hair is parted down the middle, descending in wavy strands (or braids). A light pointed beard (sometimes with a split into two halves). Around the head is a halo, in which is inscribed a cross.
On all icons of this type the image is "oglavny", that is, only the face of Christ is depicted.
The Savior of the Uncrowned is usually depicted on a towel (ubrus). This is due to the legends that are formed about the appearance of this image. According to one version, the king of the Syrian city of Edesse, having learned about the miracles, sent a painter to Jerusalem to paint an image of Christ. The Savior thus has asked to bring it water and ubrus, has washed, has wiped faces and the image has been imprinted on a towel. The image was handed over to the tsar after which he was cured of leprosy, first partially, and after baptism completely.
There are other versions of the appearance of the image. For example, the western history tells about the righteous woman Veronica, who wiped the face of Christ with her handkerchief when he carried the Cross to Golgotha. The face miraculously appeared on the cloth.
The handkerchief is usually depicted with a border along the lower edge, and the upper ends are tied with knots.
Another variation of this image is the icon of the Savior on the loin cloth. These icons do not have a shawl, they either have a plain background or a stonework. According to one legend, this image was found in the wall of the city of Edessa.
Chernobyl Savior:
Another interesting icon of the already modern period. The icon was painted after the events in Chernobyl.
The man who was engaged in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, Yuri Borisovich Andreev, was seriously ill, having received a huge dose of radiation. During this period, he constantly dreamed about the image of the icon. The church blessed the painting of the image. And soon the icon was created by iconographer Vladislav Goretsky.
It is claimed that Andreev himself felt much better after writing the icon and lived for more than 11 more years (in 2003 the icon was written, and the date of Andreev's death was 2014).
The icon depicts Jesus Christ, the Mother of God and Archistratigus Michael - the patron saint of Kiev. And in the lower part of the icon - depicts a Chernobyl pine tree, which grew in the shape of a cross. To the left of the pine - the souls of dead people. Heroes who took on fire and powerful radiation, innocently injured residents of Pripyat. And on the right - the liquidators of the accident, who worked and died in the years of eliminating the consequences of the disaster.
