The structure of the iconostasis is not accidental. It has its own hierarchy.
Each row of the iconostasis is its own row of ranks.
The classical structure implies the following order and meaning:
- The top row is the Old Testament (images of Old Testament saints, e.g. Adam, Noah, can be found here). That is, the founders of the human race. This row is also called the forefathers. The central icon is the Trinity of the Old Testament. However, the upper row in the Russian Orthodox Church is not mandatory and is not always in the design of iconostases.
- The second row is the icons of the prophetic rank. Also not an obligatory row. Here are usually represented other characters of the Old Testament history of the Church. Those who predicted the appearance of Jesus Christ - the prophets David, Moses, Solomon. In the center is usually the image of Our Lady of the Incarnation (predicting that Jesus will appear in human form).
- The third row from the top is the festive rank. These are images of church feasts, biblical subjects, showing the story of the life of Christ and his death for the salvation of mankind.
- Then follows the deesis row - it is the most important. Here there is usually an icon of the Savior on the throne. And images of praying Archangels Michael and Gabriel, the Mother of God, John the Baptist, Apostles Peter and Paul, usually made in full height. This row is the widest. Icons in it have the most important role.
- The fifth row (or rank) is the local rank. Here are the images of the Mother of God, Christ, and images of the Saints. Often in this row are installed icons of those Saints, whose names the church is named after (that is why the row is called the local rank). In the center are the Royal Gates.
The King's Gate itself can also be decorated with icons. The classical variant suggests that the king's gate should be divided into 7 parts. The upper one is the icon of the Last Supper. And 6 symmetrically arranged images - the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary in the top row, and below - images of the Evangelists.
But this option is optional. The king's gate can simply be decorated with a beautiful carved decoration.
